Venetian Masks: More Than Just Papier-machè – A Blend of Art, Fabric, and Fantasy
The tradition of papier-mâché in Venice dates back to the 12th century and is closely linked to the city’s famous Carnival. Artisans, known as maschereri, developed the technique to create lightweight yet durable masks that could be worn for long periods during celebrations. Using simple materials like paper, flour, and water, they shaped the masks by hand and decorated them with intricate designs, gold leaf, feathers, and jewels. These masks allowed people to hide their identities and social status, promoting freedom and equality during the festivities. Today, Venetian papier-mâché remains a respected craft, passed down through generations, and continues to represent the rich artistic and cultural heritage of the city.
